How the Jewelry Manufacturing Process Works

It is important for those who are interested in creating and designing jewelry to know how the manufacturing process works. This will give you an idea of how much money and time you would need to invest in creating fine jewelry.

Here are the six steps in the manufacturing process of jewelry.

1. Create a 3D jewelry model

After you have created a rough sketch of the jewelry piece you would like to create, you can use Computer Aided Design software in order to create a digital version.

A 3D model allows you to see the final jewelry design. It also gives you the opportunity to update the design before you move on to the next stage of the jewelry production process.

2. Print 3D Wax Models

This model will be used for a 3D mold of your jewelry. The majority of jewelers will use a 3D printing machine to create the model. This model is then used for the next stage in Jewelry manufacturer.

3. Pour molten metal into the jewelry mold

Now it’s time to cast your jewelry design. selects the precious metal that will be used. It is then melted to liquid form and poured in to a 3D wax mould.

This process is called “lost-wax casting” and involves melting the wax away, while the precious metals (gold, silver, platinum) or other precious metals harden into the desired shape.

4. The Main Jewellery Structure

The jewelry piece will then need to be filed smooth to remove any rough edges. This is the time to add any clasps, other functional jewelry components and make any aesthetic adjustments.

The final fabrication of a piece can take from 3 days to 1 month for most jewelers. This stage is crucial in managing jewelry production time.

5. Add any desired stones to the jewelry

Now it’s time to add any synthetic or natural gemstones into your jewelry. This step requires a microscope and other specialized tools, especially if your jewelry piece will include side stones.

6. Polish and finish the jewelry

You want to polish your jewelry piece to a high gloss at the end of the process. It is now the perfect time to add any metal stamping or engraving.

It’s now time to perform a quality assurance inspection of the jewelry. Look for flaws, loose gemstones or rough edges.
